In 1928, a stunning building was constructed on the corner of Fourth and Wabasha Street. The Lowry Hotel was immediately hailed as one of the loveliest buildings in downtown, complimenting its elegant neighbors: Rice Park, Landmark Center, and the Saint Paul Hotel, among others.
In the 1930s, The Lowry Hotel was the largest hotel in St. Paul and it was said that “every room [had a] private bath and circulating ice water.” Rates in 1937 were $2 to $4 per day.
For decades, the 11-story building was one of the most popular hangouts in the heart of downtown St. Paul, attracting politicians, writers, and a few notorious historical figures. Unfortunately, the Lowry Hotel fell into disrepair in the 1980s. Brought back to life in 2014 by Madison Equities, Lowry Square is once again one of the loveliest buildings in downtown St. Paul.
